Alaska Cod quota to drop 80-percent

Kodiak, Alaska (KINY) The North Pacific Fishery Management Council announced a reduction in the cod quota for the Coast of Alaska and another group is working to declare this a disaster.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror reported the Kodiak Fisheries Workgroup will send a letter to Gov. Bill Walker to ask for a federal disaster declaration and the funds that come with it.  They predict a severe economic impact due to the decline..

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported a 71 percent in Pacific cod abundance in the gulf since 2015 in a survey released in October.  Experts blame warmer water for the decline.  The warmer water raised the metabolism level of the cod and reduced available food leading to an increase in fish deaths.

Alaska Fish and Game reported the quota reduction was not as severe in other areas and that could result in some anglers relocating to those areas.
