Douglas Harbor ribbon cutting Friday

JUNEAU, Alaska (KINY) - A ribbon cutting is planned over the noon hour Friday for the rebuild of the Mike Pusich Douglas Harbor.

Port Engineer Gary Gillette said on Action Line this week, "On the South end of Douglas Harbor, which was the original portion built in the '60's, we basically demolished that whole system. It's all new now and up and running."

Port Director Carl Uchytil talked about harbor's namesake. "Mike Pusich was very instrumental in building the causeway to Mayflower Island, which really allowed the harbor to flourish there," said Uchytil. "We renamed it in, I believe, 2012 for his work in personally lobbying for the construction of the causeway, which created the opportunity for Douglas Harbor today."

The ribbon cutting to mark the completion of that project is planned for noon Friday.
