Halibut numbers to drop

Kenai, Alaska (KINY) The amount of halibut anglers can catch along the Pacific Coast are likely to drop sharply in 2018.

The Peninsula Clarion reported the International Pacific Halibut Commission will consider a 24 percent reduction to 31 million pounds allowed to be caught between Alaska to California.

42 million pounds were the total allowable catch this year.  Next year that number could be 31 million pounds.

The halibut quota cut is due to low recruitment rates among young halibut populations over the past decade and increasing pressure on fish stocks in the Pacific.

The Commission will meet next month in Portland, Oregon to vote on the proposal.
