Juneau Community Charter School to Move to JDHS Facilities

Juneau, AK (KINY) - JCCS will be moving to JDHS; JCCS applications are also now open.

The Juneau Community Charter School will be getting a change of venue soon. They will be moving to the Juneau-Douglas High School, which JCCS Principal Caron Smith calls a “much needed change in facility.”

“So we're all moving JDHS,” Smith added, “our entire school K-8 and all of our staff.” As of now their only concern is keeping some of their more unique off-campus offerings available. “There are two teachers, well two specialists actually,” says Smith, “ who are artists and musicians who rent private spaces at the Arctic Core building and they would like to continue to do exploratory classes with our students.”

“We're working out some transportation issues with the district, so hopefully our kids will still be able to take those exploratory classes, which are the marimba class and rock band class.”

Smith then further explained on how this move will work in the physical space, while also maintaining what makes JCCS unique.

“It will be separated. We will be operating more like a school within a school, so that we can maintain as much of who we are as possible as a Charter school, that small school atmosphere that we work so hard to promote with our kids. Everybody knows everybody at JCCS, all the parents know everybody, all the parents know each other’s children, that whole piece is really important to us.”

This news comes paired with the application period for entering students into the Charter program opening. Applications for students grades K-8 are now being accepted for the 2018-2019 school year. Applications must be turned in by April 27th. Those looking to apply can find an application form on their website. or they may call the JCCS office at 907-796-5699.

There will also be two parent info nights, which will be held on March 14th and April 5th from 6pm-7pm. They are also scheduling additional tours of current classes for parents to get a feel for how their teachers approach the constructivist model.
