Kowalke turned down by Senate

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) Republicans in the Alaska Senate failed to confirm Randall Kowalke as the newest member of the State Senate.

Kowalke was nominated by Alaska Gov. Bill Walker for the District E Senate Seat but his name was not one of three finalists submitted by republicans in that district.  It is uncertain what will happen next.

Senate Majority Leader Peter Micciche of Soldotna said his goal was to have the people select their next senator, “We believe the people of District E should be given an opportunity to fill the seat with a candidate they support through the traditional process, which is designed to respect the will of the voters. The seat does not belong to us in the Senate, or the governor. The seat belongs to the people of District E.”

This morning’s decision followed efforts yesterday by Senate Republicans encouraging the governor to reconsider his choice and work through the traditional process in support of the people of District E.

On behalf of Senate Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Peter Micciche (R-Soldotna) released the following statement.
