Litigation likely in August over demolished apartments

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) An August 13th trial date was tentatively set to settle a dispute between the City and Borough and Juneau and the owners of Gastineau Apartments.

The Juneau Empire reported the CBJ filed a litigation against James and Kathleen Barrett and Gastineau Apartments LLC in March, 2016.  The complex caught fire twice and had to be demolished by the city after it was declared a public nuisance in 2015.

Its estimated that the city spent $1.6 million to demolish the structure.  A court hearing is scheduled for April 19th to give oral arguments over a city motion to get the owners to disclose their bank records.

City Attorney Amy Mead said the records will help the CBJ determine what the insurance payout was for the fire and how much of the proceeds were used to repair the building.

The initial fire occurred in 2012.  The building then sat dormant for a few years.  It was deemed a public nuisance after a second fire in 2015.
