Man falls through ice in Bethel

Bethel, Alaska (KINY) A man is missing after five people went through a hole in the ice on the Kuskokwim River.

A dispatch from Alaska State Troopers said they received a report on New Years Eve night of an emergency from the Bethel Police Department.  Five people went through an open hole in the river ice near the confluence of the Gweek and Kuskokwin Rivers.

Rescuers were able to pull four people from the ice.  They were treated for hypothermia.  A fifth person, Mark Kasayulie, was the subject of an exhaustive search on Sunday and Monday.  Included in the search were Troopers, Bethel Police, firemen and volunteers with the Bethel Search and Rescue team.

The group said they were traveling from Bethel to Akiachak when the incident occurred.  Troopers said alcohol appeared to be a factor in the case.
