Trooper Identified in Soldotna Trooper-Involved Shooting

Soldotna, AK (KINY) - A Trooper-Involved shooting in Soldotna was given an update via Trooper reports.

The trooper involved in the December 23rd shooting has been identified as Lieutenant Dane Gilmore, Deputy Commander of E Detachment, a 24 year veteran of DPS.

That incident saw a suspicious male on private property walking into the woods. A State Trooper responded and was able to find that man. Due to the freezing temperatures, the Trooper offered the man a ride home and the man accepted. While in the back of the vehicle, the man produced a handgun. The Trooper was able to stop the car and exit safely, the man continued to brandish the weapon while in the car.

Other Troopers responded to the area and SERT was activated. EMTs were staged nearby. Troopers attempted to negotiate, hoping that the man would put down the gun, but he refused. When the man pointed the firearm at Troopers, AST shot him. The man was injured and transported to the Central Peninsula Hospital for treatment.
